(New Orleans, LA) The Saints were adamant about upgrading the defensive end position opposite of DE Cam Jordan this off season. The Saints signed DE/LB Alex Okafor from the Arizona Cardinals by issuing a similar deal as Nick Farley received last year.

The move didn’t then garner that much fan fare as all the major names were picked off the list one by one but the Saints feel Okafor can challenge for the starting DE position. The 6-4 260 lb Okafor has 13.5 sacks since arriving in the league as a 2013 fourth round pick from the University Of Texas.

The two major obstructions to his success has been injuries and the acquisition of Chandler Jones via trade from New England at Okafor’s position. The Cardinals obviously did not have the Okafor in their plans as they did not bring him back, so when the Saints came calling it seemed like a perfect opportunity to start over.

With a new lease on his football life Alex Okafor is itching and ready to prove his worth to Coach Sean Payton & The New Orleans Saints organization.

“I’ve been that guy before, and I know I can do that here,” Okafor said. “It’s just about getting back to what I do.”

The D-line is loaded with talent for the saints and some people feel that it’s the strongest position on that side of the football.

With the teams best defensive player DE Cam Jordan, 2016 1st round draft pick Sheldon Rankin’s (healthy from a broken fibula), Newly signed DT Nick Fairley all starting on the defensive line, the last member at the end position will get a lot of 1 on 1 match ups.

The Depth behind the starters is also pretty deep and talented. The Run-down of the names are DT’s Tyler Davidson, David Oneyamata, DE’s Hau’oli Kikaha, 2017 3 round pick Trey Hendrickson, Daryl Tapp, 2017 6th round pick Al-Quadin Muhammad just to name some of the top reserves.

There’s a lot of competition this year for the Saints as noted by new line backers coach Mike Nolan. Coach Nolan is one of less than a half dozen coaching additions as the saints show the fans they are very serious about a deep play off run helped by a much improved defensive line.
