Aaron Hernandez indicted by grand jury in the murder of Odin Lloyd

A grand jury has indicted former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on a first-degree murder charge in the killing of Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez was arrested on June 26 and charged with first-degree murder.

A grand jury has been investigating the case and talking to witnesses. Hernandez has been held without bail since his arrest. The indictment also contains weapons counts, the AP reported. If Hernandez is convicted he could face a life sentence without parole.

Lloyd, a semi-pro football player and associate of Hernandez, was shot and killed on June 17 and found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s house. Hernandez’s attorneys have argued that the case against him is circumstantial. The prosecution has said that Hernandez was upset with Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, for talking to people he didn’t like at a club. The prosecution has detailed its version of events that night, which include Hernandez and two other men picking up Lloyd at his house in a silver Altima. One of those men, Ernest Wallace, was also indicted Thursday on an accessory to first-degree murder (after the fact) charge, according to Wesley Lowery of the Boston Globe. The other man, Carlos Ortiz, has not been indicted, Lowery reported, although Ortiz is still in custody.

According to search warrant documents in Florida, Ortiz told police that Wallace said that Hernandez admitted to firing the fatal shots. Documents released last month showed grainy still images of Hernandez’s surveillance video from the night of Lloyd’s killing of Hernandez apparently holding a gun.

Lowery reported that no charges have been filed yet in a 2012 double homicide that police are investigating which may be connected to Hernandez.

Hernandez was scheduled to appear in court at a probable cause hearing on Thursday afternoon.
